Cornish History Made
We announced in our blog item entitled ‘Cornish History In The Making’ last September our plans to produce tin ingots from the last ore mined at South Crofty and processed at Wheal Jane mill in 1998. Now, we have smelted and refined the last of the concentrate and produced a limited number of ingots. These will be released in late February or early March, but plans are also in place to make one available through auction with the proceeds going to charity. This has already generated global interest due to the significance and historical importance of the last tin to be smelted in commercial quantities in Cornwall.
The last ingots are the traditional 28lb with two hot marks – the original ‘lamb & flag’ from the Cornish Tin Smelting Co Redruth, Seleggan, which shut down in 1931, and the ‘WHEAL JANE MINE BALDHU – SOUTH CROFTY TIN’ hot mark produced in 2024 specially for this last year of production. The mould used was also an original from the 19th Century and was found locally in a garden being used as a water feature. A certificate of authenticity will accompany each ingot, giving a more detailed description of the ore, the processing and the general provenance.
A further update will be released in the coming weeks with details of availability and price, as well as information about the auction.
